Your blog title is like a newspaper headline, it’s the first thing people see and it’s what makes them decide whether or not to read your post.

Consider what a tough job it has to do:

  • Competing with countless other intriguing headlines on social media feeds,
  • Giving an insight into what your blog post contains,
  • Presenting readers with a choice to click or not.

Blog titles don’t have to be clever, funny or use tabloid headline writing techniques, but they do have to resonate with your audience. Personally, I start with a rough idea of what the title might be (something that conveys the subject of the post), then I write the content and as I write begin to tweak the title as ideas come up.
Once the blog writing is done I’ll then review the title and perhaps do a little research by Googling my ideas and see what comes up. Of course, you can always revisit your blog titles at a later date. If you’re not getting the expected traffic then go back and try a different title, test what works for your audience and use this knowledge to inform future blog titles.
